* I am not a big fan of the taste of venison alone. You won't catch me eating a deer meat hamburger. Call me picky but I just can't get past that slightly gamey taste. That said, I do really like these meatballs. They are a bit sweet and I can't taste the gamey deer flavor at all with this recipe!

The very first time I ever had venison it was in the form of barbecued Bambi balls. Can't say I loved them, but they weren't bad. About a year ago, Larry brought home from some fresh venison from another person's kill/stash. I looked at him like: hope you plan on cooking that yourself. It's still there in the freezer. I can overnight it to you...

I'm like you on the venison. Your recipes look good though, a coverup. :-)

On your website, I keep trying to find the soap making instructions, but... help!

I do not eat venison. I would say I don't like it but I have never tried it. Hubby and my boys eat it but not me. I am picky! Luckly hubby hasn't brought home the venison this year. Although, it looks good and I probably would try it... if I didn't know what it was.

Amy & Mary - Thank you!

Alix - Thank you, but to be honest we were given our deer meat from a friend too and while I really appreciated his generosity I am a little bit glad it has now been used and is gone from the freezer. Like I said, typically I am not a big fan of it. Though if the economy keeps going downhill like it has I reckon I may have to get used to it to save money.

Joanna - Thanks. The soap tutorial is not on my regular farm website. It is on this blog. Just go to the links on the side of my blog and under Jan 09 there should be one called "How to make soap at home"

Becky - I am the same way, I have made this recipe with hamburger. It was good that way too.

Hi Jennifer, you were saying blog and I was thinking website. :-) Anyway, now I've studied all your soap blogs now. The instructions were very detailed with good pics, thank you. I looked for lye the other day at WalMart but you say I likely won't find the lye around town? and this is a small town. hmmm. What goat supply online do you usually use?

I swear I don't think Manwich is really close to what it used to be.

Oh yum ! We still have some ground venison in the freezer too !

I often use venison in combination with pork sausage for meat loaf, and mix it with ground beef for spaghetti sauce. We serve venison often at potlucks and our dish gets eaten up, people come back for seconds too, but I think if we told them it was venison, most would stop eating it. We have had that happen when after eating 2nds of our roast venison, my father-in-law, learning he was eating venison, dropped his fork and pushed his plate away. Oh well, more for us!

Joanna, you can't find Red Devil lye anymore, which is what most soapers I know use to use because it was pure, 100% lye.

You want to buy pure 100% lye, not drain cleaner because it contains metal flakes from what I have read.

I buy my goat supplies online at Jeffers livestock, they are usually the cheapest and also Valley Vet Supply. Valley Vet is in Kansas also so if I want something quick I order from them, it usually gets here the next day with no express shipping! Livestock Concepts is good and they package vaccines the best I have seen with lots of ice-packs. They are always still cold when I get them.

I guess some people might not like it because of what it is, that didn't bother me. I like venison in any kind of sauce or something that just covers up that little bit of gamey taste a bit and it has got to be a lot healthier, it is so lean! If anyone hasn't tried venison, you should, I didn't mean to give the impression it is bad or anything but I am highly picky about meat and so I am kind of like "Mikey" (remember those old Life cereal commercials?)When it comes to meat, if I like it...it has to be good. LOL.

Thanks for stopping by, I'm glad you did. I have been kicking around the idea of making soap, and your recipe makes it sound very doable.

Your bbq meatballs sound really good.

That sounds like a good recipe and we are always eating deer meat. It never use to be one of my favorites but it has grown on me.
