We Got Sprouts!

I realize that so far this blog has been a whole lot of goats and very little garden. If the weather cooperates and I don't manage to kill my vegetables with kindness this year, I do see a lot more "garden" in Goats in the Garden in the near future.
I did get a bit of a late start though. There is some good, dark compost on the farm just waiting to be scooped up to start seeds in but this year because I was lazy pressed for time I started my seeds in those nifty little peat disks. I also happen to be fascinated by the way they expand with warm water, it is quite neat to watch. It kind of reminds me of black snakes on the Fourth of July. My mother was too worried my sister or I would blow our hand off with a firecracker so it was all black snakes and poppers for me every Fourth of July as a kid...exciting. Probably why I am so easily entertained by something as simple as expanding peat now, but I digress. I planted those seeds about a week ago..

And here are those same seeds today! The 4 types of tomatoes and birdhouse gourds are sprouting. Still no sign of the eggplants or peppers though, but hopefully they will be along shortly. I hope they grow fast because I can't wait to get them out in the garden!

Nice looking sprouts. Not many of mine have come up yet. I'm still waiting. I love the little snakes, I also like watching the peat pellets expand. I guess I'm easily entertained too.

Cool. But what are those little seed pouches? I saw them on Flartus' blog too. I started my seeds in yogurt cups.

What am I missing?

I too was fascinated by the little peat discs and we have sprouts looking similar to yours in our sun room! With snow this morning and icy rain today and tonight, who knows when planting outside will be a good idea.

I would love to grow a garden some day, but between Sheba, the horses and the goats, I can only wish myself good luck and hope the grown trees will make it to next season!

This is the first year I've tried those little peat pot thingys. I kinda like them. Good luck with your other sprouts and your garden.

Go, sprouts, go! I'm eternally amazed at how a tiny seed can create a huge bush of a plant, PLUS flowers and fruits...all from some dirt and water. We should be so clever.

When they do start coming, boy do they ever! My plants are so huge now it looks like a small tomato jungle under my lights..seriously!

We'll keep watching with you :)

Oh gosh, peppers take foreverrrrrr! I have 50 I'm waiting to see poke up from my little peat expand-o-pellets. I love those things, too! Such a relief to know somebody is as easily amused as I am. ;o)

my peppers weren't sprouting, so I looked at the back of the packet and it said that it could take 21 days for them to sprout. I thought I had killed them, but they are finally starting to sprout. Good luck, and may your family be forever fed by your garden.
