The Brush Pile and the Gourds

Sunset on the farm
Last summer we had a few black walnut trees cut down on the farm. Where they were located they would have eventually had to be cut down anyway so we decided to go ahead and have it done. The little bit of extra money from the trees really helped out at the time too. The down side is we were left with two large brush piles in the goat pasture that need to be cleaned up still. Most of it will be used as firewood as soon as some extra time can be found to cut it up and stack it. Until then, the goats are having a grand time testing their agility as they climb on the limbs and play "king of the brush pile".

These two Boer kids are having a good time playing on the tree limbs. The two larger goats behind them are the yearlings "Cherry" and "Blackberry". (You have to look close to see Blackberry after the sun goes down like this.)

A young Black headed Boer buckling holds still long enough for me to actually get a picture. This is one of Nifty's kids. Nifty is the deep sleeper that almost gave me a heart attack one morning.

Trouble's daughter Annie is really starting to look like her mom!

The birdhouse gourds and other plants were not doing well in the house so what did not get planted yesterday, I went ahead and set outside in their pots. I will plant the rest of the gourds tomorrow. I am using an old cattle panel as a trellis, it is not the prettiest thing but it was free and a good way to recycle an old, bent cattle panel into something useful again. By summer it will be covered up by the plants anyway, hopefully!

I love the sunset photo. Beautiful.

Plus, now you've inspired me to plant birdhouse gourds. See what you started!

They are getting so big and certainly looking mighty adorable and feisty. :)

I would love to have Black Velvet for myself. How pretty. Such cute babies, err should I say kids. Good luck with your gourds.

I'm always so tickled when I can recycle something. I've conditioned myself to look at an item from another angle and see if it can be reused somehow.

We have to get some fencing going at the barn so our goats can get out an play.

That has to be pure enjoyment for you - watching the goats enjoy the brush pile! And I, too, think it's fantastic that you recycled the panel. By supporting the plants it will be part of the beauty!

I really don't know where you guys all find cool free stuff like cattle panels!! There's nothing around here!

Wait long enough and you wont have to cut up the brush pile, the goats hooves will do it for you ;)

That brush pile looks like so much fun! I'm planning to use cattle panels as trellises too if I ever get my garden in.

Mine were at that yesterday in our wood pile. I thought I was going to lose my 2 week old kid in there but he came out again. Silly goat.

Funny how they have to be on top of EVERYTHING. As is noted in my blog today...

Hey don't be knockin' one of my favorite garden fencing materials! We used hog pannel to make a fence along the house part of our driveway and we used some old stock panels for a hoop house, maybe I will post about them today or tomorrow. I love your goat pictures, on the brush pile. A person could spend all day watching goats and lambs have fun, what we call here "lambolympics".

Gotta luv those silly goats. The just have to king of anything at all! Thanks for sharing all the photos of them. Hubby loves to see them, too! He says I can't have goats because I would never get anything done since I would be watching them romp around all day long.

Goats are so much fun to watch, and they have no trouble at all entertaining themselves. Like your trellis too. Like Lanny, livestock panels are some of our most used and favorite fencing!

I planted morning glories on my brush pile once and it became a pretty site instead of an eyesore. It sounds more fun to have goats playing on it though. I have two huge tree trunks lying on the ground right in front of my sunroom windows. They are just too green to cut up right now. Maybe I can "pretty" them up somehow.
