Puppy Smiles - Farm Photo of the Week.

A few weeks ago I started posting a special picture of one of the goats once a week (or when I remembered too) and called it "Goat photo of the week", well the other farm animals have let me know they feel very left out! So in an effort to make everyone happy I have changed the name to "Farm Photo of the Week" and it will include weekly pictures of any cute or deserving farm animal regardless of species (or any other farm photo I want to share). The other animals are very happy with the change! Just look at those puppy smiles!

They are guardian dogs? I was at KidsCorral the other day and they have a guardian dog. They really love and appreciate the dog but the dog doesn't like to be petted or anything, totally focused on the goats.

Thanks. Yes these are Great Pyrenees puppies that were raised with our goats and are livestock guardians.

Lovely puppies! I would like to have an LGD some day. I'm unsure if I could train one though.

Thanks guys!

It isn't difficult if they have that natural instinct for it. They all go through what can be a trying "puppy" stage but I have never had to "train" any of our LGDs per say, not when it came to being a guardian anyway.

Bayla was born on the farm and she has had nothing you could call training, I think I had to verbally get onto her twice when she was a pup for trying to play with the goats. (She was a puppy after all) but that is all it took and she is a great livestock guardian.

I would recommend training them to at least tolerate a collar and leash as a puppy though, you don't want to start training them to that when they reach 70 or 80lbs! (Ask me how I know that! LOL)or wait until the day they have to go to the vet for something. Other than that so they are manageable I don't obediance train them, I don't interfere with their bonding with the goats. :) I love my Great Pyrenees dogs!
