Puppy Jail - Farm Photo of the Week

Hey, we want our phone call!

Two young Great Pyrenees puppies that are used to having the run of the goat pasture let their feelings be known about being temporarily shut in the feed pen so I could use the truck safely in the pasture.

Aw, those are just too cute! I'd love to play with those!

This weekend, I had to share mom's blog with the goats (!) and the Kalahari the filly, but at least today's post was all about me... Everyone's nuts about Allis the goat, just because mom caught her jumping on the rocks. I jump on rocks too! But I guess whenever goats do something astonishing, it gets more attention...

I'm glad the Shiloh pups got to represent your place today! But oh my, I do understand that wailing. I would do, if my mom would think of putting me in a pen!

Warm greetings from Africa,
Sheba the Swedish RR, official protector of Ishtar's Ark's Nigerien goats.

Puppies...they are so cute and it often so hard to confine them for their own good, until we think of the alternative. Kind of like human babes, heh?

I remember my sweet little fluffy Casper, not my Big 9 month old now! Wow, how fast they grow!

That is about the cutest darn thing I've ever seen! Much cuter than my cat when she's locked in her kitty carrier. She doesn't look so sweet when she chews on the wire door. LOL

Let me bail them out of jail, I want to pick one up, so cute.
I was just wondering, what would happen if a pair of rottweilers attacked the goats again. Would your dogs know those dogs are a danger to the flock? Would they try to stop them? Has any dogs tried to attack and been chased off?

Thank you all so much for your comments.

Good question "nobody-but-us-chickens". Yes they will protect the goats from other dogs. Last year a large red dog got into the buck's pasture. We only had one Pyr in that pasture but he fought with him and ran the red dog off, no goats were hurt. I hate to think what could have happened if we did not have a LGD, likely a repeat of the rottweiler incident.

While this was going on the two pyrs that was in with the does and kids positioned themselves between the buck pasture fence and the goats and raised quite a fuss about this strange dog in the next pasture over. They can be wonderful guardians that will protect their herd but people do have to be realistic, in other words one LGD can't defend against a whole pack of dogs though I have certainly heard stories of valiant livestock guardian dogs trying. Some have been killed like that too, so I always recommend people work LGDs in pairs if at all possible.
