Crazy Kansas Weather

My Grandmother used to like to say "If you don't like the weather in Kansas....wait five minutes and it will change". Boy was she ever right about that! Today was just beautiful, perfect short sleeve weather, it was sunny and warm. I even had to turn the ceiling fans on in the house. Ahh...Spring is FINALLY here, or is it? Apparently old man winter is still determined to have the last word on that.

... WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM SATURDAY TO 1 PM CDT SUNDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WICHITA HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SIGNIFICANT WINTER WEATHER... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM SATURDAY TO 1 PM CDT SUNDAY.

* TIMING... RAIN WILL DEVELOP THIS EVENING... AND IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE TO SNOW DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON SATURDAY. THIS TRANSITION COULD BE MARKED A PERIOD OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN LATE TONIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING. A PERIOD OF HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON INTO SATURDAY EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... OF 5 TO 8 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS TO NEAR 10 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE.

Are you kidding me? Eight inches of snow? Really? Oh come on! It was probably 70 degrees today! On the positive side this is one time procrastination actually worked in my favor. All of this beautiful weather lately really tempted me to put some plants out in the garden. I am glad I waited on that!

It looks like the three bottle kids I have in the house won't be going outside this weekend! They were just born and I was going to put them out in a stall as soon as I got them started on a bottle good. One of my does had a difficult time with these three boys. (yes they were all three boys!) All three are perfectly healthy and doing well but mom is recovering and could not raise them herself. Just when things were going so well. So now I have three new bottle baby goats in the house. I guess when it rains..it snows!

(Sorry no picture! My camera just does not take good pictures in the house but trust me they are CUTE!)

  2. Good grief! If I had just given birth to three baby goats I'd be in recovery too. Tell her congratulations.
I was tempted today to go buy some bedding plants and add some color to the garden. It's been so nice here... real spring weather and they say it's going to continue. I think we'll wait though, because last year we jumped the gun and then had a big freeze. All the lovely flowers froze to death.
You never know with Spring weather. I'm itching to plant.

  6. Similar thing can happen in AZ! I remember one year having 18" of snow at Easter and Easter was in mid April that year. The year or two before that I left the house on shorts and short sleeves only to have cold, sleet coming down by noon!
Another thing about AZ is that within about an hours drive you can change the weather too!
Aren't ya glad you waited on the plants?

  9. Jennifer... Imma jump off a building if spring doesn't get here - and stay here - pretty soon.

    Oy!

I imagine you're pretty sick of snow, eh?

  10. and that weather is on it's way here too. not 8 inches of snow but a snow and rain mix! i love it though. that is what makes spring fun! i live right in the city and people don't pay much attention to the weather forecast so it is really funny to see people in sleeveless shirts when it is snowing.

  11. I like your blog background.

Please don't send that snow east, we had aplenty this winter.

  12. We got a little of that snow here in SW Iowa yesterday - In the last few days the grass was finally visible, but is now covered with a white carpet again!!

3 bottle bucklings! That must be great entertainment!

  13. Just talked to my relatives in Kansas and they report snow. Your grandmother was right!

  14. It has been a very weird weather year!

  15. I sure hope the forecast is wrong. That sounds a bit extreme for spring! Auckland has a reputation for often having four seasons in one day, but not 8 inches of snow!

  16. I think your snow is headed our way too, but in the form of rain. I just planted some cold-weather seeds, but the last 2 or 3 years we've had a freeze right around Easter. So I'll be out there covering up tender seedlings, I'm sure! Still easier than corralling 3 ram kids, though.

  17. I know. Totally crazy. I took a lovely picture of Ringo yesterday afternoon, asleep in the front yard near some yellow crocuses (it's on my photo blog)... and now today, a freaking snowstorm. I think we got around 6 inches. Maybe more.

I think it is winter's last hurrah. Tomorrow a high of 43, and on Monday they are saying 61.

So today is the last day of snow. You have my guarantee. LMAO.....

  18. I heard Oklahoma got it too.
I hope by now it's all melted and warmer temps have returned!!
