I keep prairie hay out for them to eat...Hi Grandpa! I keep prairie hay out for them to eat through the winter. It is grown and baled on our land. I also feed some alfalfa hay (or alfalfa pellets if I can't find the hay) to does that are nursing kids. I have to buy that off the farm since we only have fescue and prairie grass growing here on this farm but the alfalfa really helps them to produce more milk.<br /><br />The goats also get some grain, topped with a handful of Black Oil Sunflower seeds. I also keep molasses based protein/mineral tubs out in the winter, especially the last month of the doe's pregnancy. <br /><br />They do love to browse though and love to eat on the cedar trees and browse around the pasture even in the winter. <br /><br />For shelter they have 3 sided sheds but if the weather gets too bad we will hang blankets on the front of their sheds.
